Install Potlot
Install Potlot on macOS with one command, or download the installer yourself.
Install with one command
This is the recommended way. Open Terminal and run:
curl -fsSL https://download.anaknegeri.dev/potlot/install.sh | bashThe script downloads the latest release, checks it against SHA256SUMS.txt, installs it and opens Potlot. It installs into Applications (or ~/Applications if that folder is not writable).
A file fetched this way carries no download quarantine mark, so the Gatekeeper steps below do not come up.
Install a specific version
Set POTLOT_VERSION to install a given release instead of the latest:
curl -fsSL https://download.anaknegeri.dev/potlot/install.sh | POTLOT_VERSION=0.1.2 bashManual download
Releases live at https://download.anaknegeri.dev/potlot/v<version>/, with a SHA256SUMS.txt beside the files.
Download Potlot_<version>_aarch64.dmg for Apple Silicon (M1 and later) or Potlot_<version>_x64.dmg for Intel. Open the .dmg and drag Potlot into Applications. Then follow the first launch steps below once.
First launch on macOS
Potlot is not signed with an Apple Developer ID or notarized yet, so macOS blocks the first launch of a downloaded .dmg with a message such as "Apple could not verify Potlot is free of malware". This does not mean a problem was found in the app. You only need to allow it once.
macOS 15 Sequoia and later:
- 1Open Potlot from Applications. When the warning appears, click Done (not Move to Trash).
- 2Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security.
- 3Next to "Potlot was blocked to protect your Mac", click Open Anyway, then Open Anyway again in the dialog, and enter your password or use Touch ID.
The Open Anyway button stays for about an hour after the blocked launch. If it is gone, open Potlot again and start over.
macOS 14 Sonoma and earlier: in Finder, open Applications, Control-click (or right-click) Potlot, choose Open, then click Open in the dialog.
If neither works, or macOS says the app "is damaged and can't be opened", remove the quarantine flag and open the app again:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Potlot.appUpdates
Potlot updates itself. It checks for a new version when it opens and every few hours. When one is available, click Install and restart, or install it from Settings › About, where you can also click Check for updates. Updates are signed, and the app installs only builds signed with Potlot's release key. Updates installed from inside the app do not need the Gatekeeper steps again.
You can also run the install command again to update by hand.
Verify your download
Compare the file's hash with the matching line in SHA256SUMS.txt before you open it:
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Potlot_<version>_aarch64.dmgNext, connect an agent.
